About This File
In March 2001, the ruling Taliban deliberately destroyed one of the worlds foremost cultural and historical sites, the immense Buddhas of Bamiyan. It caused an international furor. However, the hundreds of refugee families who now live among the ruins in Bamiyans caves received significantly less attention. For the duration of a year, Phil Grabsky filmed the story of one of the cave dwellers, a mischievous 8 year-old boy named Mir Hussain and his refugee family. The camera records the familys daily struggle to survive. During the three seasons of the film we discover their stories of how they survived twenty-five years of political revolutions in Afghanistan, from the Soviet invasion to the Talibans brutal regime. The breathtaking beauty of the landscape surrounding the cave in which the family lives is of stark contrast to the refugees poverty and backwardness, and yet none of these factors manage to thwart the familys hope for a better future, or Mirs love of life. Director: Phil Grabsky. U.K, 96 minutes.
