Songbirds
Marie spent most of her life behind bars after being convicted for drug offenses. Maggie, an Irish nomad is serving time for use of Crack and robbery. Seline & Natasha are French sisters sentenced for 18 years on smuggling drugs. Sam attempted to burn her husband and stabbed her brother. Theresa stabbed her neighbor to death after years of suffering from noise and harassment. These women are some of the inmates at the British Downview Prison and they all have something in common: they suffered violence and rape from men in their lives, ften since childhood. The poet Simon Armitage, the composer imon Boswell and director Brian Hill created an unprecedented genre of film - a documentary musical. Alongside their personal story, each of the women has the opportunity to tell the story of her life through a song, accompanied by a special video clip filmed within the prison. The songs are of various musical styles ranging from hip-hop to lullabies. The result is an original film that uses a fresh and humorous approach to address difficult social issues. Working on the film has contributed to their rehabilitation of the prisoners more than any conventional governmental program.

Screaming Men
The Screaming Men\’s Choir from Oulu, North Finland is a unique phenomenon. The choir, a fruition of a crazy idea brought up during casual conversation in a pub 15 years ago, has become a popular show throughout Europe. The men in the choir do not sing, they scream. The contrast of the conservative costumes and the singing of national anthems, military marches and children\’s songs in screams produces something that can be described as an encounter between modern art, a Monty Python skit, and native Maori rituals. The film by Mika Ronkainen, who was a member of the choir between the years 1994 and 1998, follows the choir\’s world tour and relates to it in a clever combination of seriousness and farcical humor. “Screaming Men” is a film about power, nationalism, fascism and faith in art. Ronkainen\’s direction suits itself to the zany humorous atmosphere. He blends rock and classical music documentary film clichés, and dilutes them with his own unique cinematic moments of humor. Documentary comedy, a delightful combination!
